Etymology

Perhaps from ártalom (“injury, harm”) +‎ -as (adjective-forming suffix), but this is unclear since ártalmas was first attested in 1525 and ártalom in 1583. Ultimately, both words are from the verb árt (“to harm, hurt, injure”).[1]
