ħdejn
Maltese
Etymology
Probably from a form of Arabic حِضْن (ḥiḍn, “bosom; side of the body; spread arm”), either the diminutive حُضَيْن (ḥuḍayn) or the dual حِضْنَيْن (ḥiḍnayn); compare related Arabic فِي أَحْضانِ (fī ʾaḥḍāni, “within, among, in the presence of”). Alternatively from حَدَّيْن (ḥaddayn), dual of حَدّ (ḥadd, “limit”, also “side”); compare North Levantine Arabic حد (ḥadd, “next to, by”).
