From Proto-Slavic *ščapъ.[1] Cognates include Slovene ščap (“stick, cudgel”), Lower Sorbian šćap (“shepherd's staff”) and Slovak štiap (“stick, pole”). Further compare Latvian šķēps (“spear”) and Proto-Germanic *skaftaz (“shaft, spear”). Unrelated to German Stab.
