Etymology

From Arabic زِقّ‎ (ziqq, “skin bag for liquids, waterskin”), from Classical Syriac ܙܩܐ‎ (zeqqā, “idem”), which might be a variant of ܣܩܐ‎ (saqqā, “sack, bag”). The latter is cognate with Ancient Greek σάκκος (sákkos, “sack, bag, sackcloth”), whence also English sack.
