Etymology

From Mediaeval Byzantine Greek ἐξώστης (exṓstēs, balcony), from Hellenistic ἐξώστης (exṓstēs, platform of ship or for docking ships), from ancient sense "one who drives out". From stem ἐξωσ- of the ancient verb ἐξωθέω, ἐξωθῶ (exōthéō, exōthô, force out).[1]
