Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish پودروم (bodrum, podrum, “basement”), from Byzantine Greek ὑπόδρομος (hupódromos, literally “under-walkway”)[1] or Byzantine Greek ἱππόδρομος (hippódromos, “hippodrome (in reference to the dungeons where animals were kept)”).[2]
