Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish پودروم (bodrum, podrum, basement), from Byzantine Greek ὑπόδρομος (hupódromos, literally under-walkway)[1] or Byzantine Greek ἱππόδρομος (hippódromos, hippodrome (in reference to the dungeons where animals were kept)).[2]
