Etymology

From Mediaeval Byzantine Greek ποντικός, from the Ancient Greek Ποντικός μῦς (Pontikós mûs, “a kind of weasel”), that is a μῦς (mûs, “mouse”) from Pontus (Ποντικός (Pontikós, “Pontic”). Also see the Mediaeval diminutives ποντίκιν (pontíkin), ποντίκιον (pontíkion), Modern Greek ποντίκι (pontíki).[1]
