Etymology

From πρόξενος (próxenos, “public guest or friend”) +‎ -ίᾱ (-íā), ultimately from προ- (pro-, “before”) +‎ ξένος (xénos, “stranger, foreigner”). See also Latin hospitium (“hospitality”).
