Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *Bělъgordъ. Composed of Ekavian Serbo-Croatian бе̏о (“white”) (from Proto-Slavic *bělъ) and гра̑д (“city”) (from Proto-Slavic *gordъ). The city is named after the white wall of the fortress that enclosed the city. See also Биоград, Бе́лгород (Bélgorod), Białogard.
