Inherited from Old East Slavic дѣꙗти (dějati), from Proto-Slavic *dějati, an extension of Proto-Slavic *děti (“to do, to say”). Cognate with Russian де́ять (déjatʹ), Ukrainian ді́яти (díjaty).
