дрыва

Old Ruthenian

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *drъva.

Noun

дрыва • (transliteration needed) n inan pl

  1. Alternative form of дрова (“wood”)

Descendants

Unlike крывавый, which won over кровавый, this reflex of *-rъ- was replaced by дрова and is mostly lost in daughter languages. However, it does survive in certain derivatives:

  • ⇒ Belarusian: дрывако́л (dryvakól, “woodchopper”)
  • ⇒ Belarusian: дрывасе́к (dryvasjék, “woodcutter”)
  • ⇒ Belarusian: дрыво́тня (dryvótnja, “woodhouse”)
  • ⇒ Belarusian: дрывя́ны (dryvjány, “wooden”)
  • ⇒ Ukrainian: дриві́тня (dryvítnja, “woodhouse”) (dialectal)
