From Proto-Turkic *ētük (“boot(s)”). Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (etük, “soft leather footwear”); Bashkir итек (itek), Kyrgyz өтүк (ötük), Uzbek etik, Turkmen ädik, Uyghur ئوتۇك‎ (otuk, “high boot(s)”), etc.
