From Proto-Turkic *teŋri ~ *taŋrɨ (“god; sky, heaven”).
Cognate with Old Turkic 𐱅𐰭𐰼𐰃 (täŋri, “god; sky”), Southern Altai теҥери (teŋeri, “sky”), Turkish tanrı (“god”). See the latter term for an extensive etymology.
