хрусталь
Russian

    Etymology

Borrowed from Byzantine Greek κρουστάλλιον (kroustállion), a diminutive form of κρούσταλλον (kroústallon), a variant of Byzantine Greek κρύσταλλον (krústallon), both ultimately from Ancient Greek κρύσταλλος (krústallos). Compare Greek κρούσταλλο (kroústallo). The starting х- was possibly influenced by хрусте́ть (xrustétʹ). The gender was likely influenced by the doublet кристалл (kristall), which entered Russian via Latin crystallum.
