Etymology

Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish چوربه‌جی‎ / چورباجی‎ (çorbacı, a military rank of the Janissaries, literally “soup cook”). Equivalent to чорба (čorba, “soup”) +‎ -джия (-džija). Cognate to Macedonian чорбаџија (čorbadžija) and Greek τσορμπατζής (tsormpatzís).
