Etymology
From Persian الماس (almâs). The form էլմաս (ēlmas) is from Ottoman Turkish الماس (elmas). Ačaṙyan explains the -տ (-t) in the form ալմաստ (almast) as an inner-Armenian development, comparing such pairs as Սաղամաս (Sałamas) → Սալմաստ (Salmast, “Salmas”), սուս (sus) → dialectal սուստ (sust, “silent”), պես (pes) → dialectal -պեստ (-pest, “like”), ռուս (ṙus) → dialectal ռուստ (ṙust, “Russian”). But compare Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾlmʾst' /almāst/), Northern Kurdish almast, Zazaki almast.
