Middle Armenian

Etymology

The root is աղատ- (ałat-, lamentation, caress, supplication) (compare dialectal աղատ (ałat, supplication; caress), աղըտ (ałət, lamentation)), of uncertain origin. Turkish ağıt may be borrowed from Armenian.

According to Martirosyan, probably a rhyming formation based on աղաչ- (ałačʿ-) and պաղատ- (pałat-); compare dialectal աղատ-պաղատ (ałat-pałat, supplication).
