The second component is *կուր (*kur), *կրայ (*kray, “shell”), found in կրայակիր (krayakir, “kind of mollusc”), կրայ (kray, “tortoise”). The first component is either գաղտ (gałt, “hidden, secret”) or is etymologically related to գլտորել (gltorel, “to roll”), thus “shell-fish with a spiral shell”.
