From Proto-Indo-European *tr̥s-, zero-grade of *ters- (“to dry”). Among the cognates compare especially Ancient Greek ταρσός (tarsós, “cheese hurdle”), ταρσιά (tarsiá, “stake for drying figs”), Old High German darra (“stake for drying fruits”) (German Darre).
