A dialectal word, inherited from unattested Old Armenian *թէժ (*tʿēž), a Middle Iranian borrowing: compare Northern Kurdish tîj, tûj (“sharp; hot, spicy”), Central Kurdish تیژ (tîj), تێژ (têj, “sharp, hot (peppery), quick”), Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫎𐫏𐫋 (tyc /tēǰ/, “sharp”), Persian تیز (tiz, “sharp; quick”). Doublet of թեզ (tʿez).
