According to Ačaṙyan from earlier *թէթեղն (*tʿētʿełn), reduplication of the root *թիղ- (*tʿił-) or *թեղ- (*tʿeł-), from Proto-Indo-European *ptel-, from the root *pet- (“to fly”). Cognate with Ancient Greek πτῐ́λον (ptílon, “feather”) and related to թիթեռն (tʿitʿeṙn).
