Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kand- and cognate with Ancient Greek κάνδαρος (kándaros, “charcoal”), Sanskrit चन्द्र (candrá, “shining”), Latin candeo. Related to խանձեմ (xanjem). See also շանթ (šantʿ).
