The origin is uncertain.

Possibly related to Old Georgian კუნძული (ḳunʒuli) and together with it borrowed from a third source, perhaps Semitic: compare Arabic جزيرة‎ (jazīra, “island”), Classical Syriac ܓܙܪܬܐ‎ (gāzartāʾ, “island”).
