Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *pr̥tʰ-, from *sp(ʰ)erd(ʰ)- (to rush; to spring; running), + -ն- (-n-). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic прѧдати (prędati, to jump, tremble) (Russian пряда́ть (prjadátʹ), пря́нуть (prjánutʹ)) and perhaps with Old Armenian արթ- (artʿ-).[1] For more on this supposed root see Pokorny, without the Armenian.[2]
