մատն

Middle Armenian

Etymology

From Arabic مَتْن‎ (matn, “ridge”), whence also Ottoman Turkish متن‎ (metn, “a high and rocky ridge”), Persian متن‎ (matn, “a hard piece of ground”).

Noun

մատն • (matn), nominative plural մատներ (matner)

  1. a high and hard piece of ground

Usage notes

Some dictionaries incorrectly lemmatize the plural մատներ (matner) as a separate and unrelated word.

Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *mh₁-d-, from *meh₁- (“to measure”), and cognate with the Celtic word for “thumb”; compare Breton meud, Welsh bawd (“thumb”).
