մաքառիմ

Old Armenian

Etymology

According to Ačaṙyan, from Akkadian 𒃮𒊑 (/maḫāru/, to face, to confront; to oppose). J̌ahukyan considers the similarity with the Akkadian accidental and prefers the connection with Ancient Greek μάχομαι (mákhomai), μάχη (mákhē), supposing a common origin, perhaps a substrate word of the form *makh-.
