Etymology

The original spelling is նաւթի (nawtʿi), of uncertain origin. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *n̥-h₁d-ti- and cognate with Ancient Greek νῆστις (nêstis, not eating, fasting (of persons); causing hunger, starving); for the constituents compare ան- (an-), ուտեմ (utem), + -թի (-tʿi). Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *n-H(H)gʷʰ-ti-o- and cognate with Ancient Greek νήφω (nḗphō, to be sober, drink no wine). The by-form անօթի (anōtʿi) can be treated as analogical after the privative prefix ան- (an-).
