From earlier *պատսախանի (*patsaxani), borrowed from an Iranian compound equivalent to Old Iranian *pati-saxwan-iya-, from Proto-Iranian *cánhati; see there for more. The form պատասխան (patasxan) is a later development.

   պատասխանի տալ ― patasxani tal ― to answer for; to defend, excuse or justify oneself

   տալ վասն անձին պատասխանի ― tal vasn anjin patasxani ― to plead one's own cause

Often abbreviated as պտ՟ (pt.) = պատասխանի (patasxani).
