Old Armenian
Etymology
The origin is uncertain. Compare similar words in other languages: Georgian პინჩვი (ṗinčvi, “nostrils”), Ossetian фындз (fynʒ, “nose”), Abkhaz а-ҧынҵа (a-pəncʼa, “nose”), Kabardian фӏыншэ (fʼənše, “palate”), Egyptian fnḏ (“nose”). According to Hübschmann, the Caucasian words are borrowed from Armenian[1], which would fit if the final syllable -vi in Georgian პინჩვი (ṗinčvi, “nostrils”) reflects the Armenian dual number found in պինչ-վը-ներ (pinčʿ-və-ner) of the Erzurum dialect.[2]
