ցիրդ

Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is unknown. Petersson compares to Sanskrit सिध्रक (sidhraka, a kind of tree) and derives from Proto-Indo-European *sḱidh-ro-. Adoncʿ and Kapancjan compare to Akkadian 𒄑𒋛𒅕𒁺 (GIŠsi.ir.du /sirdu/), a kind of oil-producing tree nowadays identified with the olive-tree.
