From Proto-Turkic *artïč, from Proto-Iranian *hampr̥sā (“juniper”); cognate with Azerbaijani ardıc, Southern Altai артыш (artïš), Bashkir артыш (artış), Tatar артыш (artış) and Tuvan артыш (artış). Doublet of ابهل‎ (ebhül, ubhul), the same word from Arabic أَبْهُل‎ (ʔabhul) which was borrowed from its Middle Persian descendant.
