إبزيم

Arabic

Alternative forms

  • إِبْزَام‎ (ʔibzām), إِبْزِين‎ (ʔibzīn)

Etymology

Superficially of the root ب ز م‎ (b-z-m), however a borrowing of Persian ابزین‎ (abzin), اوزین‎ (avzin, “ring; buckle”), which is maybe a suffixation of the same word as بز‎ (baz, “high ground, hill, summit of a mountain”), and easily بَزِيم‎ (bazīm, “a shoot of a plant or frond used to bind vegetable bundles and the bundle itself”), وَزِيم‎ (wazīm, “bundle of vegetables”) are all the same word rather via a meaning of binding or surrounding, then meanings بَزَمَ‎ (bazama, “to take with two fingers”) denominal. Also in Jewish Babylonian Aramaic אבזיינא‎ (ʾaḇzyēnā), אפזיינא‎ (ʾap̄zyēnā, “buckle”), בזיינא‎ (bazyēnā, “buckle, clasp”), Jewish Neo-Aramaic אבזונא‎ (ʾaḇzūnā), Northern Kurdish avzûm, avzûn (“buckle”), Central Kurdish ئاوزوونە‎ (awzûne), ئاوزینە‎ (awzîne, “buckle”), Georgian აბზინდა (abzinda, “buckle”), and in the Armenian invented language Ṙuštuni աբզէդոն (abzēdon, “girdle”). The sound change of trailing ـنٌ (-nun) to ـمٌ‎ (-mun) having happened in Arabic is evidenced by مِيجَم‎ (mījam, “fuller’s beetle”), see its forms on its page.
