Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀉𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀭𑀤𑀺 (uttaradi), from Sanskrit उत्तरति (uttarati, to alight, descend).

Pronunciation

Verb

اُتَرنا (utarnā) (Hindi spelling उतरना)

  1. to get down, to get off
    درخت سے اُترو۔
    daraxt se utro.
    Get off the tree.
  2. to descend, dismount
    گھوڑے سے اُترو اور میرے ساتھ آؤ۔
    ghoṛe se utro aur mere sāth ā'o.
    Get off the horse and come with me.
  3. to wear off, fade, disappear
    نشہ اُترناnashah utarnāTo regain sense. (literally, “for the drugs to wear off”)
  4. to land (an airplane)
    جہاز اُتر گیا ہے۔
    jahāz utar gayā hai.
    The plane has landed.
  5. (road transport) to exit, leave (highway or motorway)
    یہاں سے اُترنا ہے۔
    yahāṉ se utarnā hai.
    This is the exit we need to take.
    (literally, “This is where we need to exit.”)
