Ellipsis of مَدِينَة الْقُدْس‎ (madīnat al-quds), a calque of Classical Syriac ܡܕܝܢܬ ܩܘܕܫܐ‎ (məḏīnaṯ quḏšā), from Hebrew עִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ‎ (ʿîr haq-qṓḏeš, “the city of holiness”). Morphologically the definite of قُدْس‎ (quds), from the root ق د س‎ (q-d-s).
