Arabic

Etymology

Cognate with Classical Syriac ܓܽܘܪܒܳܐ‎ (gurbā), Hebrew גֶּרֶב‎ (géreḇ) and Central Kurdish گۆروا‎ (gorwa), گۆرە‎ (gore); of disputed etymology due to unknown direction of borrowings:

  • Possibly Persian جوراب‎ (jôrâb, “sock, stocking”), with earlier forms Persian گورب‎ (gôrab), گوراب‎ (gôrâb), speculatively a metathesis of Middle Persian *gōrb/pāy (literally “grave of foot”) which has potential to be folk etymology.
  • Alternatively the Iranian was borrowed from Aramaic גְּרָב / גְּרַב‎ (gəraḇ, gər؜āḇ, “skin bottle or pouch”), with it being unknown which language family the new specified semantic meaning as a sock developed first.
