Arabic

Etymology 1

The origin is unknown. A root ج ي ب‎ (j-y-b) lacks otherwise except obvious derivations of this noun. Possibly from the root ج ب ب‎ (j-b-b) whence also the known جُبَّة‎ (jubba) garment. Also suggested to be from Aramaic, Classical Syriac ܓܰܝܒ݁ܳܐ‎ (gaybā, “temple, vaulted chamber”) with peculiar semantic evolution or from unattested meanings, or Aramaic 𐡢𐡡𐡠‎ (gbʾ) / גַּבָּא‎ / ܓܰܒܴ݁ܐ‎ (gabbā, “side, flank”), if from this then doublet of جَنْب‎ (janb), and جَوْف‎ (jawf, “cavity”) is also compared.[1]
