حامل

See also: جامل‎

Arabic

Etymology

Derived from the active participle of حَمَلَ‎ (ḥamala, “to carry”).

Adjective

حَامِل • (ḥāmil) (feminine plural حَوَامِلُ‎ (ḥawāmilu))

  1. pregnant

Usage notes

  • Due to its semantic constraints, حَامِل‎ (ḥāmil, “pregnant”) is virtually always encountered in the feminine. As with some other gender-specific words, like حائِض‎ (ḥāʾiḍ, “menstruating”), the feminine ending is usually omitted. (The form حامِلة‎ (ḥāmila) is a rarer variant, whence Persian حامله‎ (hâmele) and its descendants.)
  • When used as a participle of حَمَلَ‎ (ḥamala), حَامِل‎ (ḥāmil, “carrying”) behaves like a normal participle.
