From Classical Persian حوالی‎ (havālī, “vicinity, outskirts”), from Arabic حَوَالَيْ‎ (ḥawālay, “around”), probably due to the suburban setting, or alternatively from Arabic حَوَالِي‎ (ḥawālī, “private space”), referring to the nature or function, popularized in Mughal India.
