From Middle Persian štr'stʾn' (*šahrestān, province; capital, city), Manichaean Middle Persian šhrystʾn (šahrestān, province; provincial capital, city). Synchronically can be analyzed as شهر (šahr, city) + ـستان (stân). Akin to Old Armenian շահաստան (šahastan), an Iranian borrowing.
