From the older form طاقوق‎ (takuk), from Proto-Turkic *tiakïgu (“hen, fowl”); cognate with Azerbaijani toyuq, Bashkir тауыҡ (tawıq), Chuvash чӑх (čăh), Kazakh тауық (tauyq), Kyrgyz тоок (took), Tatar тавык (tawıq), Turkmen towuk, Uyghur توخۇ‎ (toxu) and Uzbek tovuq.
