قطف

Arabic

Etymology

From the root ق ط ف‎ (q-ṭ-f), from Proto-Semitic *qaṭap-. Compare Aramaic קְטַף‎ / ܩܛܲܦ‎ (qṭap̄), Hebrew קָטַף‎ (qāṭáp̄), Akkadian 𒋡𒋫𒁍 (qa-ta-pu /qatāpu/). The saltbush name must be from Classical Syriac ܩܲܛܦܵܐ‎ (qaṭəp̄ā), ܩܛܵܦܵܐ‎ (qəṭāp̄ā, “saltbush”)[1][2], for it mirrors its vocalization.
