كوی

Ottoman Turkish

Etymology

Uncertain; perhaps from Proto-Turkic *kon-, *ko- (“to put”), whence قونمق‎ (konmak, “to settle, perch”) and قومق‎ (komak, “to put”). Alternatively, Nişanian proposes a derivation from Middle Persian [script needed] (kōy, “street”).
