Inherited from Proto-Iranian *luxšáh, Proto-Indo-Iranian *lukšás, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *lówksneh₂ (“moon”), derived from the root *lewk- (“bright, to shine, to see”).

Cognates include Old Armenian լուսին (lusin, “moon”), Proto-Slavic *luna and Old Latin losna.
