Etymology
Generally believed to be of Coptic origin, however the exact word is omitted. One option is *ⲙⲁϫⲱⲣ (*mačōr) from ⲙⲁ- (ma-, “place”) + ϫⲱⲣ (čōr, “to scatter”), another ⲙⲁⲕⲣⲟ (makro, “trough, mortar”) to which colloquial Egyptian Arabic could have applied the tool-pattern as in كَالُون (kālūn).
