نخچیر

Persian

Alternative forms

  • نخجیر‎ (naxjir)

Etymology

Inherited from Middle Persian 𐭭𐭧𐭰𐭩𐭫‎ (naxčīr, “game, quarry, chase; hunting, hunt”), from Proto-Iranian *naxusčr̥ya- (“top hunting; top quarry”).

The first part naxu- ("first; top") is related to نخست‎ (noxost, “first”), and the latter part *sčr̥ya- ("hunting; what is to be chased") is related to شکار‎ (šekâr, “hunt, hunting”), hence the original meaning "what is to be hunted to display the outstanding skill of the hunter".

Cognate with Parthian 𐭍𐭇𐭔𐭉𐭓‎ (naxčīr, “game, quarry, chase”), and Sogdian ܢܓܫܝܪ‎ (naxšīr, “wild beast; wild goat”).
