From Proto-Semitic *naśaʔ- (“lift, raise”). Compare Ge'ez ነሥአ (näśʾä, “to lift, to take”), Akkadian 𒈾𒋗𒌑𒌝 (našûm) and Biblical Hebrew נָשָׂא‎ (nɔśɔʾ).
