Etymology

From Old Uyghur yašïl, from Old Turkic 𐰖𐱁𐰞‎ (yašïl, “green”), from Proto-Turkic *jāĺ-ɨl (“1. green; 2. yellow”), derived from *jāĺ (“young, green vegetables; age”) (compare Uyghur ياش‎ (yash, “age, young”)). Proto-Turkic *jāĺ-ɨl is related to Proto-Mongolic *ǯöl(ü)ge (“green meadow”) and Tungusic, that altogether come from Proto-Altaic *ńi̯ṓĺe ("green", "vegetable").[1]
