From Middle Persian gwptn' (guftan, “to say, speak”), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *gáwbati, from Proto-Indo-European *gewH- (“to call, cry”) with a -b⁽ʰ⁾- enlargement, perhaps connected to the synonymous *ǵʰewH-. Cognate to Old Church Slavonic говорити (govoriti).
