From -ܠ‎ (lə-, la-, “to, for”) + ܓܡܪ‎ (gəmār), absolute state of ܓܡܪܐ‎ (gəmārā, “completion”). The alternate pronunciation ܓܡܪ‎ (gəmar) is the absolute form of the unattested *ܓܡܪܐ‎ (gamrā).
