From -ܠ (lə-, la-, “to, for”) + ܓܡܪ (gəmār), absolute state of ܓܡܪܐ (gəmārā, “completion”). The alternate pronunciation ܓܡܪ (gəmar) is the absolute form of the unattested *ܓܡܪܐ (gamrā).
