Etymology

Causitive of ܢܵܦܹܠ‎ (nāpēl, “to fall”); compare the same in Hebrew הִפִּיל‎ (hipíl)

Pronunciation

  • (standard) IPA(key): [man.pɪl.]

Verb

ܡܲܢܦܸܠ • (manpil) (present participle ܡܲܢܦܘܼܠܹܐ‎ (manpulē), past participle ܡܘܼܢܦܸܠܵܐ‎ (munpillā))

  1. to drop
    ‏ܡܘܼܢܦܸܠ ܠܝܼ ܡܵܐܢܹ̈ܐ ܠܐܲܪܥܵܐ ܘܬܒ݂ܝܼܪܗܘܿܢ.‎‎
    munpil lī mānē l-arʿā w-tḇirhon.
I dropped the plates on the ground and they broke.
    ‏ܫܘܼܪܛܵܐ ܩܵܡ ܕܵܒ݂ܹܩ ܠܹܗ ܘܘܵܠܹܐ ܗ݇ܘܵܐ ܕܡܲܢܦܸܠ ܙܲܝܢܘܼ̈ܗܝ.‎‎
šurṭā qām dāḇēq lēh w-wālē wā d-manpil zaynuh.

Usage notes

  • When someone has accidentally dropped something by losing his or her grip on it, it is more common to use ܢܵܦܹܠ ܡ̣ܢ‎ (nāpēl min, “to fall from”) rather than ܡܲܢܦܸܠ (manpil). In that case, the subject denotes the dropped item, and is usually postponed:
‏ܩܲܢܝܵܐ ܢܦܝܼܠ ܠܹܗ ܡܸܢܝܼ.‎‎ ― I (accidentally) dropped the pen. (literally, “The pen fell from me.”)
